Join us for conversation about local journalism with Andrew Conte, author of Death of the Daily News: How Citizen Gatekeepers Can Save Local Journalism, at the Carnegie Library of McKeesport on Friday, October 14 at 2 p.m.
The city of McKeesport in southwestern Pennsylvania once had a population of more than fifty thousand people. But like many river towns in SW PA, McKeesport fell hard when the steel industry collapsed under the weight of out-of-control spending and out-of-date infrastructure. Another major blow came at the end of 2015, when McKeesport's 131 year old newspaper, the Daily News, closed it's doors. In Death of the Daily News: How Citizen Gatekeepers Can Save Local Journalism, on-sale September 2022, author and former investigative journalist Andrew Conte uses McKeesport and the death of the Daily News to tell a larger story about the consequences of communities losing their local news source.
